When Dr. Felix Badillo performed prostate surgery on Bill Phelps last December, he didn't get anywhere near him.

Operating at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, the doctor used the da Vinci Surgical System - a robotic, computer-assisted surgical device - to work on the former sheet metal mechanic turned bus driver and part-time lobsterman. Seated at a console and observing three-dimensional images on a computer screen, Badillo manipulated the robotic arms - picture a more spidery R2-D2 - to remove Phelps' prostate and sew stitches.
