Verizon Hopes to Offer Television Service Through Its Fios Network to Entire Town of Hempstead

In a move that could take a sizable chunk out of Cablevision's subscriber base, Verizon has filed an application with the Town of Hempstead to offer television service through its FiOS network. The move marks the first time an entire town on Long Island would be offered a choice between broadband television services. It would also be a first for New York State.

The application, filed by Verizon attorneys, now moves to an April 4, 2006 hearing in front of town board officials and residents. Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said that the application could be approved off the bench at that time, but would most likely need further review.
