Union: Supermarket Contract Talks Take 'Turn for Worse'

Summary


The union representing workers at Long Island's Stop & Shop and Pathmark stores said Friday that management is setting itself up for a Sunday strike by not giving way on health-care demands.

United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500, which represents 7,000 grocery employees at King Kullen, Stop & Shop and Pathmark stores on Long Island, said Stop & Shop and Pathmark have required that workers pay out-of-pocket health-care expenses. Under the current four-year deal, which expires on midnight Saturday, employees don't set aside paycheck deductions for health care.
