Following in lockstep behind Southampton Town, Riverhead Town is looking to privatize its animal shelter in the coming months.
Riverhead Town Board Member Jim Wooten put out a request for proposals to the private sector September 10, asking interested organizations to submit plans for running the animal shelter at a higher level of service and a lower cost. Wooten thinks that the town can save $100,000 each year with a privatized shelter. The shelter now costs the town about $285,000 each year to run, not including some of the utilities, Wooten said. Salaries and benefits make up the bulk of that sum, Wooten said.See the full content of this document
