It's hard to find good help these days. Long Island's unemployment rate, at 3.8 percent, is low, and the cost of living is astronomical, discouraging many talented individuals from staying or moving here.

"We are finding there is a shortage of talent globally, and especially in many of the skilled and technical areas requiring degrees," said John Magloire, chief operating officer of Access Staffing in Melville, a company that specializes in both full-time and part-time positions across a wide range of industries. Magloire said accountants and nurses are particularly difficult to find, while Tricia Folliero, director of recruitment advertising for Sanna Mattson MacLeod Advertising, a member of the ANEW Marketing Group in Smithtown, pinpoints engineers as the greatest challenge. "There are simply too many engineering positions and not enough qualified people applying for them," she said.
