Summary


The Nature Conservancy, the Long Island Pine Barrens Society and dozens of civic groups have long worked on their own to stop open space from being snapped up and developed. Talking to one another was preaching to the choir.

But a few weeks ago they, along with more than 100 other environmental and civic groups and government agencies, joined forces to launch Long Island's Last Stand, a coalition to protect 25,000 acres of open space, 10,000 acres of farmland and help manage tens of thousands of acres of additional open space.
