LIBN: A week ago, the audit advisory committee that your office put together announced the results of its first report, claiming that the county has improved internal controls. Why was the audit committee necessary and why should we care about their findings?

Weitzman: It's important because this audit committee is an additional layer of oversight for Nassau County. When we took office, one of the first things we wanted to do was restore the public's trust in Nassau County's government. One of the major concerns was that there weren't sufficient controls in place. The controls here should be no less than at any major corporation - because Nassau County is really a $2.5 billion business.
