If you're selling creativity, don't get bogged down in management.

That was an early lesson learned by Doug Horst, president of Horst Design International, an architectural planning and design firm concentrating on retail outlets. When he formed HDI in 1986, the company began to expand rapidly, with big clients such as Macy's coming on board. From a staff of two at the Cold Spring Harbor headquarters, personnel grew to include 23 staffers - but that was actually a negative.
