That began as a campaign to generate awareness for a local Long Island town has now turned into its most anticipated event of the year. The annual Oyster Festival, run by the Rotary Club of Oyster Bay, has generated close to $5 million for nonprofits over the past 25 years. The Oyster Festival takes place this weekend.
"Instead of nonprofits just putting their hands out, we asked, 'Why don't you guys help yourselves?'" said Tom Riordan, past chairman of the Oyster Festival Committee of the Rotary Club.
