Nov. 8 was a big day for Long Island Democrats, and perhaps no one loomed larger than Richard H. Schaffer, chairman of the Suffolk County Democratic Committee. Schaffer drew up the plans that produced the first Democrat Brookhaven Town Supervisor in 30 years, a majority on the Brookhaven town board and a majority in the Suffolk County Legislature. A former Babylon town supervisor, Schaffer's name is now being batted around for chairman of the state Democratic party.

At least in Brookhaven, do you feel like the GOP did a lot of your heavy lifting? I think they were a big help in terms of laying out the corruption and arrogance that had taken over the party and the local government for so many years.
