In 1985, former Queens resident Gary Salomon accompanied his friend, Robert Schanbaum, to a sign store in Austin, Texas. Schanbaum, owner of a chain of shoe-repair outlets, was looking for information on signs, and Salomon, in the advertising and direct- mail business, was just along for the ride.
