Another dark day for local school districts dawned recently, when Gov. Spitzer warned that school aid increases were not likely in the new state budget. But our very own State Sen. Dean Skelos, R- Rockville Centre, has saved the day - or at least brightened it - with a proposal to shift the cost of New York teacher salaries and benefits to the state.

Excluding New York City teachers - the Big Apple would fend for itself - the idea is to pay teachers with state funds and let local districts use property tax revenue for education and infrastructure.
