Summary


A group of eighteen women in 1913 met in Lawrence every Monday to decide which families in the community were in need of support. The Peninsula Counseling Center - then called the Relief Association of Lawrence - was born. Today, the organization celebrates its 95th birthday as a leader in Long Island's mental health arena.

"It's interesting. When we first started, there was a tremendous emphasis on helping individuals through talk therapy," said Herb Ruben, executive director of PCC. "Then, in the 1970s, medicinal developments became one of the many transformations in mental health treatment and social services."
