Commentary: Long Island Goes Toe to Toe with the French

Summary

What happens when a group of wine geeks with a bunch of French wines meet a group of Long Island winemakers toting their own wares? The result was a wine-tasting shootout.

The two groups, totaling about 30, gathered on a summer evening at the contemporary American eatery Michael's in midtown Manhattan. Arriving with boxes of wine, cases of expensive Riedel and Spiegelau stemware, paper bags and rolls of aluminum foil (to hide the labels), the wine geeks - members of Philadelphian Mark Squires' Wine Bulletin Board on ERobertParker.com, the Web site run by the noted wine critic Robert Parker, had been preparing for weeks. Each guest was assigned a wine to bring. There was pinot gris and Gewurztraminer from Alsace, Vouvray from the Loire, Champagnes, white Burgundies, red Bordeaux and dessert wines.
