Commentary: When It Comes to Hunger, Long Island Gets It

Summary


With all the problems that Long Islanders are facing, it's encouraging to know that on the issues of hunger and supporting your neighbors in need, they get it. Hunger on Long Island has received more than its fair share of headlines in recent months. Certainly, most of the stories are driven by the fact that we're in the middle of the holiday season.

The holiday season usually brings out the best in people. And on Long Island so many of our neighbors and friends are responding in record numbers to appeals received from hunger action organizations such as Long Island Cares. I'm also confident that our colleagues at Island Harvest, The Interfaith Nutrition Network, Catholic Charities and others are experiencing the same increase in public support. During a recent trip to Albany to meet with my colleagues on the board of the New York State Food Bank Association all eight food banks across the state have been reporting significant increases in responses to their direct mail campaigns.
