Commentary: Charities Are Victims of the Hurricanes

Summary


Hurricanes Katrina and Wilma. Asian tsunamis. Pakistani earthquakes. Long Islanders living alone, hungry and near poverty. For hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders the place to send charitable dollars is obvious. Out-of-state and overseas. And why not? The images are compelling. As a result, our region is generously responding with dollars to the dramatic images that dominate our daily news coverage.

Yet this successive series of natural disasters is creating a philanthropic crisis on Long Island for those charitable organizations who serve victims of daily circumstance rather than dramatic and sudden assaults from nature. When the large charitable checks have been sent, far too few look back to determine the needs of local soup kitchens or day-care centers.
