Babylon Plugs in to Public Car Charging Stations

Summary

The Town of Babylon recently announced the charging stations it built for its fleet of electric cars at five locations within the town will be available to the public free of charge.

The 10 charging stations were built to recharge four 2012 Chevy Volts the town recently added to its fleet. The electric cars, which cost about $39,000 each before a $7,500 federal tax credit, can travel up to 35 miles on one charge before switching over to a gasoline-powered engine. Babylon officials said that the code enforcement, building inspectors and commercial waste inspectors that will be using the vehicles rarely ever travel over 40 miles per day. It costs roughly $1.60 in electricity to fully charge the Chevy Volt.
