Long Island Expressway Hosts Dump Truck Parade

Upset over the lack of economic stimulus funding earmarked for Long Island, a construction trade group is taking its beef on the road. An estimated 50 heavy equipment vehicles, driven by members of the Long Island Contractors Association, will drive along the Long Island Expressway from Hauppauge to Melville to appeal for more money for projects in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Nassau County Sees a Third Less in Sales Tax

Sales tax revenue in Nassau County during the period of Sept. 15 to Nov. 30, which includes Black Friday, dropped 34 percent compared to last year, County Executive Tom Suozzi said Friday. The drop means that the county will be facing an extra $40 million budget gap for 2008 and is expected to have to fill that much, if not more, for 2009.

Education William H. Frohlich has joined Nassau BOCES in Garden City as executive manager of the department of communications and agency planning. Frohlich most recently served as president and chief operating officer of the National Paper Trade Association and its PAPER Foundation, both nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of paper industry companies.

New York Exodus Continues

More people are leaving New York State than moving here, according to the latest migration study from Missouri-based United Van Lines. The states bleeding population are led by Michigan, where 67 percent of United's moves were outbound. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Maine also saw more people moving out than moving in. In New York, 55 percent of United's moves were outbound.

Bridgehampton Approved for Bailout Money

Almost every public Long Island bank has now applied for and been approved for participation in the government's $700 billion bailout. The latest is Bridgehampton National Bank, which said today it was approved to participate in the Capital Purchase Program, in which healthy banks sell preferred shares to the U.S. Treasury.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy Delivers Training Cash

With the job market this tight, it makes sense employers want the most skilled employees they can find. Unfortunately, the cash needed to train workers might be a bit tight. Luckily, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said the county is making thousands of dollars available the Suffolk employers in order to provide the training they need.
